Fuel up? So are MPs’ salaries!

Word is going around that MPs might get a 50% remuneration hike.
Najib-Ringgit-MalaysiaKUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim revealed that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak had agreed in principle to increase the salaries and allowances of parliamentarians.
When questioned by a leading Chinese daily, Shahidan refused to comment on how much the increase would amount to. The daily however reported that there are certain parties who claimed that the increase could be in the region of 50%.
“While Najib had agreed in principle to the salary increase, consent from the Cabinet was still needed,” he said adding that there was no need to present the matter to the lower house.
“The matter is still being discussed and the implementation of the increase will only be made at the end of the year, or early next year,” added Shahidan.
In 2011, when the government allocated some RM3 million for the proposed salary and allowance increments for MPs, it was duly shot down by the opposition.
This time around, the government will consider giving the opposition a choice in the matter – whether to accept the pay increase or not.
Shahidan said that Malaysian MPs were generally paid less than those in other countries like Uganda, Thailand and Indonesia.
The salary of an MP was fixed at RM6,508 but they can make up to RM10,000 a month in perks and allowances, according to the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) Act 1980 (Act 235).
The last time Malaysian MPs received a remuneration revision was in 2004.
