Ghapur calls Putrajaya’s ‘bluff’ in Sabah

Ghapur is spot on in saying the Federal Government treats Sabah and Sarawak unfairly.

KOTA KINABALU: Bingkor Assemblyman Jeffrey Kitingan can’t believe that Kalabakan MP Abdul Ghapur Salleh is the only legislator with the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition willing to call “a spade a spade” and call Putrajaya’s “bluff” in Sabah.
He hopes that more BN legislators will step forward so that the people of Sabah will be seen as united across the political divide and speaking with one voice in facing up to Putrajaya when it comes to issues affecting their nation in the Federation.
“We have quite a number of BN MPs consistently dismissing legitimate issues raised by rights activists and the Opposition in Sabah,” said Jeffrey. “While Ghapur was debating the budget speech in Parliament last week, there were two MPs who continued to remain in a state of denial and tried to interrupt him with warnings, distractions and disruptions.”
He was referring to Putatan MP Marcus Mojigoh and Kinabatangan MP Bung Mokhtar Radin. Marcus warned Ghapur that his comments were “dangerous” while Bung contradicted the Kalabakan MP by saying that the BN was trying to do its best and it was the Opposition that was the source of all the problems in Sabah.
Jeffrey was adding his voice to the many in social media, in the wake of Ghapur’s take in Parliament, that Putrajaya should take heed of the Kalabakan MP’s advice and listen to the people in Sabah and not continue to send minister after minister to threaten them with dire consequences for speaking up.
“Ghapur was spot on for saying that the grievances arise from the unfair treatment of Sabah and Sarawak by the Federal Government,” said Jeffrey who is also Star Sabah Chief. “He has opened Pandora’s Box in Borneo.”
The most compelling image of Sabah, painted by Ghapur, is that of a man in a public squat over a hole in the ground which serves as his toilet, pointed out the Bingkor Assemblyman. “This is what we get after 51 years in Malaysia.”
Extrapolating from this graphic description, argued Jeffrey, is the logical deduction that there’s basis in raising the various issues that have contributed to the extreme levels of poverty in Sabah and the lack of security.
“There was great injustice done to Sabah, and Sarawak, in their being pulled into the 1963 Federation to facilitate the merger of Singapore with Malaya,” said Jeffrey. “Singapore was expelled and the Borneo nations were left hanging with nothing more than 5 per cent of oil royalty from their own resources and ever dwindling dignity.”
Now that the genie is also out of the bottle following Ghapur’s performance, reiterated Jeffrey, other BN legislators in Sabah must either throw their lot with the “rebel from Umno Sabah” or say why they disagree with him.
“Keeping quiet is not an option,” warned Jeffrey.
“Don’t say in private that you agree with the rights activists and say something else in public to please the political masters in Putrajaya. This won’t do. The people must reject such double-faced politicians who only think of themselves.”
The Star Sabah Chief noted that no MP in the peninsula rebutted Ghapur and “their silence speaks a thousand words”. “In that sense, the two BN Sabah MPs who interrupted Ghapur in Parliament should be ashamed of themselves,” he said.
