HOW TO PROGRESS WHEN ONLINE MEDIA IS BANNED? MCA annual meet to debate 'rejuvenation’
KUALA LUMPUR - An MCA leader yesterday said the party’s urgent need to rejuvenate and restrategise should take centre stage during MCA’s 61st annual general meeting (AGM) next Sunday.
Party central committee member Datuk Ti Lian Ker said he expected MCA delegates nationwide to offer ideas on how the ailing party could recover from their back-to-back defeats in two general elections.
He said MCA’s previous election strategies, which centred around engaging Chinese associations and guilds, were outmoded in the current political climate.
“The majority of Chinese in Malaysia today are well educated, independent, critical and analytical. Gone are the days when the Chinese guilds and associations alone can deliver the votes,” he told the New Straits Times yesterday.
Ti said to remain relevant, MCA leaders must strive to reach out to the younger generation, particularly through social media.
He said the AGM would offer an ideal platform for party delegates to discuss ways to engage the now more modern Chinese community.
Ti said the AGM would also focus on the party’s need to retain the support of the non-Chinese voters, whom he said contributed to the party’s electoral wins in several constituencies in the 13th General Election (GE13) last year.
Ti said party delegates should emphasise the need for the party to maintain its moderate stand on racial and religious matters.
MCA, which went through a leadership crisis last year, won only seven parliamentary and 11 state seats in the GE13.
The party’s new leadership, headed by Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, pledged to transform MCA.
Meanwhile, party veteran Datuk Yap Pian Hon warned that the party’s AGM, which will be conducted for just one day, may not provide enough time for delegates to hold fruitful discussions.
“Transforming the party is no easy feat and we will need a lot of time to talk about how we can reinvigorate the party.”
Yap, who is a Serdang MCA division leader, said his division was taking measures to engage the Chinese community living there.
“We are working hard to provide aid to those in need. But other divisions in Selangor are ‘sleeping’, and this needs to be addressed.”
Yap said he expected party delegates to request updates from MCA leadership on its plans to introduce a new election system, which will enable more party members to participate in the voting process. -NST
