I suggested Bible-burning only to Muslim parents, says Perkasa chief

Ibrahim Ali (pic) has broken his silence on the issue of his controversial statement last year calling for the burning of Bibles.
In an interview with Utusan Malaysia today, he defended his statement by saying it was only meant for the Muslim parents of students who were allegedly given the holy book outside their school last year, Malaysiakini reported.
"A reporter asked me what was Perkasa's view on the alleged distribution of Bibles and I replied that the parents should just seize the books from their children and burn it. This is so that the children would not be confused.
The Perkasa president is said to have made the statement at a press conference in Penang in January last year.
The controversy over his remarks made headlines last week when Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri, in a parliamentary reply to Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng, said that no charges were filed against Ibrahim as he was defending the sanctity of Islam.
The reply from Nancy brought much outrage from all quarters, including Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat lawmakers, Christian leaders as well as the public in general.
The backlash also caused Nancy to release a statement that the decision not to charge Ibrahim came from the Attorney-General because he was found to have followed the spirit of the law in line with Article 11 of the Federal Constitution which bars proselytisation of Muslims.
When asked to respond to the controversy after a meeting with Bagan Perkasa members in Seberang Jaya on Saturday,  Ibrahim said: "No, no... that is an old story. I don't want to comment anything. This is all to spin (the matter further) and after the spinning, cause more misunderstanding.
"My statement then only referred to what had happened in Penang... about the Bibles that some quarters were distributing in front of a school."
Meanwhile, yesterday, at a press conference following the party's general assembly, MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai called on the police to give the full details of their investigation on Ibrahim Ali and the reasons for not charging over his controversial remark.
