Isis has tarnished Islam’s image, says Anwar

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis), which has seen scores of Malaysians joining its cause, has tarnished the image of Islam by using the Islamisation agenda as part of its struggles, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
In his Hari Raya Aidiladha address today, the opposition leader said the terror group opted for violence because of its failure to understand Islam wholly.
"The failure to understand Islam holistically creates a wrong perception among the public which affects Islam as a perfect and whole religion," he said in a statement.
This includes understanding and mastering the teachings of Islam.
"We need to get back to the roots of understanding Islam and the humanity that its teaching contains," he added.
The Malaysian Insider reported recently that many of the 40-odd Malaysians currently fighting alongside Isis forces in the Middle East have been influenced to take up the struggle via social media like Facebook.
The move is unlike the early 2000s where a lot of recruitment was done through religious schools.
Twenty-two Malaysians have so far been arrested for links to Isis and police are now tracking down five militants believed to be connected to Isis and Abu Sayyaf, the Philippines-based terror group.
Police also detained three men allegedly on their way to Istanbul via Doha to join Isis forces.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak about a week ago denounced the jihadist movement at the United Nations General Assembly, saying Isis militants had destroyed lives and communities and destabilised fragile nations and threatened regional security.
“We reject this so-called Islamic State. We reject this state defined by extremism. And we condemn the violence being committed in the name of Islam.
“We know that the threat to world peace and security is not Islam, but extremism: intolerant, violent and militant extremism. The actions of these militants are beyond conscience and belief. They violate the teachings of Islam, the example set by the Prophet Muhammad, and the principles of Islamic law,” Najib told the assembly.
