Just days after getting UNSC seat, cocky Malaysian leaders already behaving like North Korea!

Just days after getting UNSC seat, cocky M'sian leaders already behaving like North Korea!
Yesterday I made a public call to the Prime Minister to clean up our dismal human rights record at home to prove to the international community that we are worthy of a seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC).
I reminded the PM that his first inescapable duty must be to honour his 2012 promise to repeal the Sedition Act.
To my dismay, not three days have passed since we won the UNSC seat, Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan came out yesterday warning the United States not to meddle in our country’s affairs – referring to the ongoing national debate on whether or not to abolish the Sedition Act.
The Minister’s remarks were made in response to a statement issued by the US government through its embassy in Malaysia – that the US had taken note of the lawyers march calling for the repeal of the Sedition Act.
It is deplorable for a government Minister to make such intolerant remarks in response to the US statement, which urged Putrajaya to apply the rule of law fairly, transparently and apolitically to promote confidence in Malaysia’s democracy, judiciary and economy
His crass reaction shows an inability to listen and constructively engage opinions and views of others, mirroring the mindset of Perkasa members, and not that of a government Minister. If the world didn’t know better, Abdul Rahman Dahlan’s outburst could easily be mistaken as that of a North Korean Minister responding to the US.

Regrettably, the Minister’s reaction serves to reaffirm international views that Malaysia is not ready to take up its UNSC seat, representing the UN in its global promotion and protection of human rights.
How can we be expected to take part in the international role of monitoring and assessing the conduct of other nation states to determine whether they have threatened international peace, or have violated human rights, when we ourselves are not able to constructively engage views of other member states concerning how we manage our own human rights issues in the country.
I urge the Prime Minister to immediately censure Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan for his unacceptable and ill-advised remarks on US interference in our domestic affairs and to honour his promise to repeal the Sedition Act to dispel any international reservations that we are not worthy of a seat on the UNSC.
