Kelantan, Selangor poles apart on alcohol issue

PAS' Khalid Samad maintains his stance on the Oktoberfest issue.
sel_kel_OktoberfestPETALING JAYA: MP for Shah Alam Khalid Samad stood his ground regarding his Oktoberfest comments, saying that the communities of Kelantan and Selangor were different, requiring the respective state governments to place conditions that reflect their differing values.
He said, “The conditions imposed in Kelantan will definitely be different from those imposed in Selangor.”
“Conditions imposed by the local authorities must reflect the ‘waqi’ of the community in which the celebration is held,” Khalid explained.
He added that PAS’ challenge was to change perceptions with regard to alcohol consumption until all of society viewed it as destructive to health as cigarette smoking.
“This all needs to happen through a process of persuasion and debate and not coercion.
“At the same time, we have a responsibility to ensure that non-Muslims are guaranteed the justice of Islam that their rights would not be violated,” Khalid said.
He cautioned, “Never give them the impression that Islam wants to suppress them, but rather that it wants to defend and protect them.
“This includes their right to follow what is deemed lawful or unlawful according to their own religions.”
Khalid added that while alcohol was forbidden, or haram, in Islam, followers of other faiths has a right to consume alcohol if their religions allowed it, as long as it was done discreetly.
