LANDSLIDE: Still no green light to go home as displaced residents await soil tests

LANDSLIDE: Still no green light to go home as displaced residents await soil tests
The authorities will carry out soil tests near Teratai Apartment in Taman Bunga Raya, Bukit Beruntung today after more than 2,500 residents were evacuated yesterday following soil movement which caused a retaining wall to collapse.
The Public Works Department and the Public Works Institute are expected to carry out the soil tests today before the residents are given the green light to go back to their units.
Last night, 515 people or 126 families were evacuated from Blocks K and L after a retaining wall collapsed due to soil erosion caused by heavy rainfall.
Earlier yesterday morning, about 2,000 residents had been evacuated from the five-storey Teratai Apartment due to soil movement in the vicinity of their homes.
Kuala Kubu Baru Fire and Rescue department chief Nor Azhar Tajudin said the evacuations were carried out as a precautionary measure.
"The affected residents from the two blocks have been temporarily housed at nearby schools while experts carry out soil testing," he said.
"The heavy downpour yesterday afternoon and evening caused soil to break through the retaining wall near Blocks K and L.
"Although there was no immediate danger posed to the residents, the evacuation was ordered as a precautionary measure."
Three schools near Teratai Apartment have been converted into temporary shelters for the affected residents.
Nor Azhar said there were no casualties reported and about 20 firemen were on duty at the scene to manage any emergencies that might arise.
Police are also at the scene to ensure there are no break-ins at the empty apartment units.
It was learnt that early signs of soil erosion had appeared in the vicinity of the apartments on Sunday, with the situation worsening yesterday morning. -TMI

Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali is expected to visit the affected residents this afternoon.
