Lawyer says attempt to arrest witness is an intimidation

A lawyer today claimed the police tried to intimidate a witness in his suit against an actress who had an alleged affair with a minister, a news portal reported.
Latheefa Koya (pic), the lawyer representing Noor Azman Azemi, who was the former driver of actress Zahida Mohamed Rafique, said her client had gone to the Bukit Indah police station yesterday but the police tried to arrest him, Malaysiakini reported.
The report said the same thing also happened yesterday at the Kuala Lumpur High Court where Noor Azman was testifying against the actress.
He claimed that Zahida had allegedly accused him of running away with RM200,000 that he was supposed to deposit into her bank account.
He contended that the statements had portrayed him as untrustworthy, a thief and a criminal, and gave him a bad reputation, jeopardising his chances of getting jobs.
Noor Azman said he was remanded by the police for four days after Zahida lodged a report against him. He is seeking general, aggravated and exemplary damages as well as costs and other relief deemed fit by the court.
"However, the police and prosecution did not take action then but chose to do it yesterday and wanted to charge him today just as he was testifying. This is intimidation of a witness to protect a minister," she said, according to the report.
Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported Noor Azman, who is also an Umno Youth division leader, continued to give his testimony.
Zahida was also there to take the witness stand.
Following the incidents, the report said Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Hue Siew Kheng had yesterday ordered the police not to arrest Noor Azman.
He had said that the trial should not be disrupted, the report added.
The driver had testified under oath that Zahida had an alleged affair with Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, who is also Umno vice-president.
However, in 2012, Shafie had denied the affair.
The hearing continues on November 11.
