With the exception of the Orang Asli and natives of Sabah and Sarawak, everyone else in Malaysia is a pendatang (immigrant), a Gerakan delegate said at the party’s national conference today.
Johor delegate Tan Lai Soon said not only were the Chinese and Indians pendatang, but the Malays were not natives of Malaysia either as they had emigrated from Indonesia.
"Except for the natives of Sabah and Sarawak and the Orang Asli, everyone else in Malaysia is a pendatang," Tan said during the party's 43rd National Delegates Conference.
Tan said he wanted to explain the position of Malaysians in the country, as the original Bumiputeras were the Orang Asli and natives of Sabah and Sarawak.
"When Umno members say that the Chinese are pendatang, they obviously forgot that they were also pendatang from Indonesia," he said.
On Thursday, former information minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin wondered why the Chinese were annoyed when they were referred as “pendatang”.
"The Chinese want to identify themselves by speaking in their own dialects. They continue to isolate themselves by not mastering the national language.
"This is self-isolation," Zainuddin said in his blog, adding that despite 57 years of independence, the Chinese still have to be advised to learn Bahasa Malaysia.
Zainuddin cited Najib’s call at last weekend's MCA general assembly, as many Chinese, including the younger generation, were not able to converse, read or understand Bahasa Malaysia well.
During a debate at the Gerakan conference today, Tan praised Najib's officiating address, but said what was more important was whether Najib would fulfil his promises.
"If Najib just talks but does not keep his promises, then it is pointless," Tan said.
"Gerakan has never asked Najib for a Cabinet position, therefore, we are not obligated to him.
"However, Gerakan thanks Najib for giving the party the opportunity to be involved in Cabinet matters.”
Tan also took a swipe at Malay rights group Perkasa and Isma, saying the leaders of these groups were well educated and could be considered professionals.
"Unfortunately, they do not behave like that as they like to make nonsensical comments which incite racial hatred."
Tan said such individuals should be treated like mentally ill people, who could not cured unless they were struck down by a debilitating illness.
"Only then will we be able to resolve the unity issues in Malaysia. As long as such individuals are around, it will be a challenge for Malaysia to be united and safe."
