Muhammad Rizalman Ismail, the Malaysian diplomat accused of sexually assaulting a New Zealand woman last May, is expected to face charges in a New Zealand court as early as next week.
New Zealand Herald reported today that authorities expect 38-year-old Rizalman to be sent back soon as the extradition process was ongoing.
But the report said official sources would not confirm or deny the latest development.
The woman said she fought him off as neighbours went to her aid.
Malaysia and New Zealand have been working together to extradite him back to Wellington to face charges.
Rizalman's return to Malaysia after invoking diplomatic immunity sparked an outrage in the country.
Upon his return, he was warded for psychiatric tests at the Tuanku Mizan Military Hospital in Kuala Lumpur.
Putrajaya had said that the process to extradite him was being undertaken in the spirit of close cooperation within the existing legal parameters of the two countries, as no extradition treaty exists between the two countries.
