DAP national vice-chairman Teresa Kok defended her right as a non-Muslim to attend the Oktoberfest festival on Friday, saying that she did not insult anyone by doing so.
She said her attendance was not to “show off” but a personal choice and her freedom as a non-Muslim.
"It was held in a closed area, I was not showing off."
Kok and other PR lawmakers have come under fire from Utusan Malaysia and Muslim groups for allegedly promoting beer drinking in the country after photos of the event were circulated online.
As for PAS lawmaker Nasrudin Hassan's criticism of the event, she said the issue should not arise as Muslims were never invited to the event.
"He (Nasruddin) has the right to disagree but should also realise that Muslims were not invited.
"It was a non-Muslim event, so it does not involve other faiths or religions," she said.
Nasrudin, who is also a PAS central committee member, had condemned the event, saying that it touched on Muslim sensitivity.
He questioned the motive of the event this year which was openly and widely advertised whereas previous festivals were held closed door.
Utusan Malaysia's weekend edition, Mingguan Malaysia, continued its attack on the event, claiming that DAP was the strongest among its other Pakatan Rakyat partners by supporting the Oktoberfest beer festival, over objections from the Malay-Muslim community and PAS.
Awang Selamat, pseudonym used by the paper's editors in their weekly editorial, even said that the state government, under the stewardship of Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali, has become a mere "follower" for not having the courage to act decisively and cancel the event.
n the matter, Kok said the paper had no right to meddle in affairs of non-Muslims.
"Why would Utusan meddle in my programme? There were also other non-Muslims events that I attended and posted on my Facebook page.
"Are they trying to tell me what I can and can't put on my Facebook, photos of weddings and 'yamseng' (Chinese for 'bottoms up')?"
It was reported that several DAP and PKR leaders attended the event held at One Utama on Friday. They included DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, DAP publicity secretary Tony Pua, Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo, PKR central committee member R. Sivarasa, Bukit Gasing assemblyman R. Rajiv and Damansara Utama assemblyman Yeo Bee Yin.
Also present was Selangor executive councillor member Elizabeth Wong, who had also uploaded on her Facebook status that about 5,000 people were at the festival and thanked the leaders who were present.
