Nancy: ‘Burn Bible’ speech based on constitution

Mkini
The Attorney-General’s Chambers decided not to prosecute Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali under the Sedition Act because his threat to burn copies of the Bible with the term “Allah” was in line with the federal constitution.
This is the latest explanation by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri, who has been drawing flak for claiming that Ibrahim had been let off the hook because he was defending Islam.
Nancy, who oversees the law portfolio, said the Attorney-General’s Chambers reached the decision after studying the speech made by Ibrahim which was based on the spirit of Article 11 (4) of the Federal Constitution.
“The decision not to prosecute was made after considering the outcome of the police investigation,” she was quoted as saying byBernama.
Article 11 (4) refers to the right to freedom of religion as well as the prohibition of propagating other faiths to those who profess Islam.
Ibrahim’s speech was delivered at the height of the legal tussle between the church and government over the term “Allah” being used to refer to God in the Malay and Iban versions of the Bible.
Perkasa had argued that these version of the Bible could be used to proselytize Muslims.
Meanwhile, Nancy said the decision not to prosecute a person is based on statements and facts without considering religious and racial backgrounds as well as political leanings.
Furthermore, she said such decisions are made with fairness and integrity.
As for the criticisms levelled against her, Nancy blamed it on those who only highlighted certain parts of her parliamentary written reply to DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
“It must be noted that irresponsible quarters only picked up a portion of the reply until it created misunderstanding and misinterpretation over the real meaning that was conveyed,” she said.
With this explanation, Nancy hoped the public would see how transparent the government is in handling the legal process.
She also hoped the public would calm down and refrain from making statements that can jeopardise harmony and hurt the feelings of others.
