'NO ONE DARES TO BRIBE ME' - Chong Wei

'NO ONE DARES TO BRIBE ME' - Chong Wei
WORLD No 1 Lee Chong Wei has heard about match-fixing in badminton but noted that no one has ever dared to approach him throughout his career.
“No one dares to bribe me. I’ve never and do not want to be involved in match-fixing. I want this menace to be eradicated completely,” said Chong Wei yesterday.
The three-time All England champion said match-fixing probably evolved together with those who bet on badminton.
“It is something very unhealthy in the sport as it also indirectly affects those who are not involved in it.
“Sometimes when I lose a match, I also hear people accusing me of many things... it gets me very angry as I’ve never done it,” said Chong Wei, a two-time Olympic silver medallist.
Chong Wei, who turns 32 on Oct 21, applauded the Badminton World Federation for introducing steps to stop match-fixing in the sport.
“BWF is doing a good job and hopefully match-fixing can be eradicated soon,” he added.
Independent shuttlers Tan Chun Seang and Arif Latif, who are sponsored by badminton product manufacturers Apacs and Fleet respectively, confirmed yesterday that match-fixing exists in badminton.
Chun Seang, who is currently competing in the German badminton league, said match-fixing is almost non-existent in Europe but is a problem in Asia.
The 28-year-old, who left the BA of Malaysia (BAM) in 2011, believes that bookies are more concentrated in Asian countries.
“I left BAM in 2011, and in my one year of coaching in Austria, I faced no such problem. As a player, I have never condoned selling matches. I always fought till the very end.
“And as a coach, I hardly came across any bookies. I think the issue is more rampant in Asia among the Asian players,” said Chun Seang.
Arif Latif, a former BAM player, said match-fixing is like a disease, and it is sometimes up to the players to decide themselves.
“Sometimes when I am playing in tournaments outside Malaysia, I receive calls from private numbers. The thing is I don’t entertain these calls.
“They can be quite persistent, calling more than once, but I’ll never know for sure if these calls are from bookies, it’s just that I want to be safe of this.”
The 25-year-old Arif added: “I hope players will think for themselves and not get involved, as it is not good for them or the game.” -NST
