MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai told a press conference that Najib had merely expressed hope that the Chinese community would continue to support the BN, and not PR.
“The online report was twisted, they like giving a negative image (of the government). We were all there at the assembly, we heard clearly the prime minister’s positive response to MCA’s proposals.
Earlier today, The Malaysian Insider reported that Najib had, in his speech at the MCA’s 61st annual general assembly, said that the Chinese could not make demands from the government, and then support PR.
“I’d like to do more, maybe one day I can do more. But I also need the Chinese community to support BN. Come on. You have to do your part.
“You can’t demand and then support DAP. You can’t demand and then support PR. You demand, you support BN, we will be fair to the Chinese community,” Najib had said.
Liow, who is also the Transport Minister, said today that the BN-led government was doing its best to take care of all the races.
“The government is pushing for development, the country’s economic growth, to create employment, more affordable housing. We are doing our level best to take care of all the races.
“For MCA, we will voice out for the Chinese community, we understand better the feelings of the Chinese community.”
Liow said the community has the right to speak out to the government and help them understand their needs better.
“And we expect and hope the Chinese community will support the government and continue to support the government,” said the Bentong MP.
Najib’s speech today sparked criticism from opposition politicians, academics, and Malaysian Internet users alike, who all sought to remind him that he was the prime minister for the entire country and not just BN supporters.
