Orang Asal erect new Baram blockade

Those who wrecked the earlier blockade vow to be back in three days to re-enact their act.
baramMIRI: Orang Asal protesters against the proposed Baram Dam erected a new blockade in Long Kesseh village at KM 15 Jalan Samling to replace a year-old one demolished Tuesday morning by police, Forestry Department officers and loggers seeking access to the timber in the area. There’s another blockade within the same vicinity which was left untouched.
Apparently, those who wrecked the earlier blockade vowed to be back in three days to re-enact their act.
These reportedly include 50 police General Operation Force (GOF) personnel, 10 Forestry Department officers and a handful of loggers from logging companies.
“Asan Udau, a Forestry Department officer, told us that we were breaking the law by setting up the barricade to stop the company from entering the site and to extract the timber,” said Johannes Luhat, one of the protesters manning the blockade site.
“We told him that the company is actually logging on native customary land belonging to the villages of Na’ah and Long Kesseh and doing it illegally as they have yet to conduct an environmental impact assessment (EIA) study of the area, which was previously logged before.”
Also, stressed Johannes, the affected villagers were against any logging activities on their lands.
“The area is still under dispute and no court order was issued to order us to lift our blockade.”
The protesters lodged a police report and a report at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against illegal logging activities of the companies in July this year.
