Muslim conservatives have ganged up on a Selangor PAS lawmaker for defending the "Oktoberfest" beer festival, arguing that the event insulted Muslim sensitivities and was a “public vice”.
Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad was criticised for his stance that the event should not be shut down as it was aimed at non-Muslims and was being held in non-Muslim-majority areas of the Klang Valley.
Khalid’s colleague in PAS, Nasrudin Hassan, said that Muslim authorities had a duty to shut the event down even though non-Muslims had a right to consume alcohol.
Nasrudin, who is Temerloh MP, took to Facebook today to call on federal and state Muslim authorities to put a stop to the festival, which is being held in several places throughout Selangor.
“The beer festival which is being promoted everywhere has become a public vice even if it is held in a closed setting. It threatens Muslim sensitivities.
“It’s the same as mass-promoted adultery. It is a public vice and it is the duty of the Muslim authorities and other Muslims to rise up against it,” said Nasrudin in the Facebook post.
Nasrudin, however, admitted that non-Muslims had a right to consume alcohol but disagreed that the event should be promoted.
“In an Islamic country with Islam as the religion of the federation, that right must only be done behind closed doors and not promoted as a festival such as this,” Nasrudin said.
This sentiment was echoed by Umno Youth exco member Dr Fathul Bari Mat Jahya who agreed that the festival should be held in an enclosed area and not in the open.
Carlsberg Malaysia’s Oktoberfest, which started on September 24 in a hotel in Subang, will see smaller events being held in Kuala Lumpur, Puchong, Kepong, Batu Pahat, Petaling Jaya and Penang.
The event will end with an outdoor festival from October 10 to 12 at the 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Petaling Jaya.
In remarks published in the website ISMAweb, Khalid of PAS had said that the organisers had a right to hold the event as it was targeted at non-Muslims and was being held in places where non-Muslims were the majority.
“Islam acknowledges that other religions do not forbid alcohol,” Khalid said.
In Islam, it is a bigger sin for Muslims to worship the gods and deities of other religions. Yet these other religions still had the right to exist as seen in the presence of churches and temples, Khalid argued.
The Shah Alam MP was criticised for his remarks with some Muslim NGO leaders saying that he had “lost his moral compass” and was in the midst of an “identity crisis”.
Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman, of the Muslim rights group Isma, said Khalid had lost his moral compass and was in danger of falling prey to “plotism”.
According to the ISMAweb report, "plotism" was when a Muslim leader had beliefs that were inconsistent and unstable to the point where he was easily manipulated by others to the detriment of his own faith.
“Khalid must be wary of plotism and refer to the Quran and prophetic teachings, not western ideology,” said Abdullah Zaik.
Deputy Perak Mufti Zamri Hashim also chastised Khalid for not feeling troubled by the developments that seemed to “threaten Islam’s supremacy” in the country.
“Even though this is a plural country, from its history and constitution, this is still an Islamic country,” he said.
