Penang’s voluntary unit not trying to take over the role of police, says Guan Eng

Slamming Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for making the statement, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng demanded the minister to provide proof to support the claim.
Lim insisted that PPS was set up four years ago in response to the police's call to the public to help combat crime.
He said the police had also explained the role of PPS in the past.
"We have the proof to show that the police made the statements to that effect.
"At no time have we ever said we wanted to replace the police. We merely wanted to assist them.
"If it was not for the police asking the public to help, the people would not have taken part in the community policing programmes," he said.
Lim said he was upset with Ahmad Zahid's reply to Tanjung MP Ng Wei Aik, who had asked whether the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela), Neighbourhood Watch (RT) and community policing teams were registered with Registrar of Society in Parliament last week.
Zahid had reiterated that the PPS unit was illegal, as safety and security issues fell under the purview of the federal government.
He said that based on records, some of the PPS members were found to be involved in criminal cases and had police reports lodged against them, for assault and other cases.
"It also seems like they want to take over the role of the police," Zahid was quoted as saying.
Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, said the move against PPS was politically motivated and questioned why action have yet to be taken on the 100-over PPS members rounded up last August.
"What did they do wrong? Until today, they have not been charged, and yet he (Zahid) made politically-motivated attacks against them, which is unfair.
"Why is it that he did not explain, that for the last four years, there was no problem with the PPS?" asked Lim.
He reiterated that the unit was not illegal as it was formed by the state government.
"Political parties like Umno and PAS also have voluntary units of their own... if they can do it, why can't a state government?
As for the bad hats within PPS, Lim said the same could also be said about the police force.
"But the entire police force could not be punished for the wrongdoings of a few. So, why the double-standards?" added Lim.
