This the sternest ruling yet from PAS towards PasMa, which was formed by members disenchanted with the Islamist party’s conservative leadership, which includes the Shura or council of elder Muslim scholars.
According to Shura Council secretary Nik Zawawi Salleh, the ban was in line with PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s reminder during the latter’s speech at the end of the party’s general assembly last month in Johor.
Hadi had even said that the party could only have “one imam and one jemaah” and those who wanted to start their own jemaah had better leave the party.
Differences between PAS’s conservatives and progressives widened during the Selangor menteri besar crisis and erupted in the general assembly, or Muktamar, where both sides criticised each other publicly.
PasMa came to prominence during the Selangor MB crisis and became a sounding board for leaders and members upset at the party’s conservatives.
In statement today, Zawawi repeated Hadi’s warning.
“The party’s divisions and state commissions should also write in to the central committee and the Shura Council if such things happen in their areas so that further action can be taken,” said Zawawi.
Before this statement, only the Terengganu PAS had banned members from being involved in PasMa.
The group has even held a dialogue session in Nik Zawawi’s own area, Kampung Raja, Besut, Terengganu.
PasMa president Datuk Phahrolrazi Zawawi and his deputy Mohamad Husin had given speeches at the event.
The Shura Council’s statement today comes on the heels of another PasMa event last night in Kuala Kedah, Kedah.
At the event, Mohamad Husin had called on PAS to relook the Shura Council’s current members to ensure that they were scholars of the highest calibre and that they were respected by all members.
Mohamad Husin had said the academic and professionals backgrounds of each Shura Council member had to be scrutinised to ensure they were really qualified.
The Shura Council is made up of eminent scholars in the party chosen by the central committee, which is in turn elected at the assembly.
Although it does not get involved in the day-to-day running of the party and its policy decisions, the Shura Council acts as a spiritual guardian for PAS.
It monitors and issues rulings on the central committee’s decisions to ensure that the party adheres to the council’s interpretation of Islamic principles.
