Rafizi: See you at UM tonight

Newly appointed PKR Secretary General is defiant that Anwar's event in UM will go on as planned.
rafizi-ramli1-aug31KUALA LUMPUR: Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli today claimed that the police and by extension the government’s effort to curb opposition is nothing new and insists that the event featuring Anwar Ibrahim as speaker, planned at University Malaya (UM) will take place as scheduled.
Speaking to reporters at parliament lobby, Rafizi said, “This (lockdown of UM campus) is nothing new, in fact it’s an old tactic and has been used before.
“They have to keep in mind that it’s not the 90s anymore. We are more organised and committed to our cause more than ever.
“I hope the police will respect our rights and we will give our full co-operation.
Rafizi insisted that the people have an inalienable right to gather peacefully and UM shouldn’t get in the way.
“University Malaya’s Vice Chancellor should focus on UM’s world ranking that’s slipping instead of these matters.
“Anwar Ibrahim is one of UM’s most decorated alumnus and deserves better from his alma mater,” he added.
UM’s student affairs vice chancellor Rohana Yusof, last week said the university had banned the programme featuring Anwar Ibrahim because it would be in violation of the university’s rules and would tarnish the university’s reputation.
It is understood that UM will be under police lockdown and officers stationed at all exit and entry points of the campus tonight.
