RUMBLE IN UMNO: Can Dr M let go or will he BURY Khairy along with Najib?

RUMBLE IN UMNO: Can Dr M let go or will he BURY Khairy along with Najib?
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has the potential to become the next deputy prime minister should Datuk Seri Najib Razak decide to step down before the 14th general election, according to veteran journalist Datuk A. Kadir Jasin, in his blog post.
Widely known as a pro Mahathir loyalist his posting caught many people by surprise wondering whether he has a premonition of things to come in the near future?
Elaborating that this could only happen if the prime minister post was held by Najib’s cousin Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and if it is fated that Najib has to step down before the next general elections, and the current DPM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has no interest in the top post, Khairy may very well be bundled into the DPM post.
Supposedly, there is indeed a power tussle in UMNO with the Mahathir Camp making its move to unseat Najib; it will pave the way for Hishamuddin to take over the hot seat. And with DPM Muhyiddin Yassin having doubts that Malay support will not dwindle come GE14, it may be high time for Mahathir to make that move.
With UMNO having serious doubts of Najib’s capability to take BN into the next General Election, UMNO will not risk having him around. Najib will have to go before GE14 in order for Hishamuddin to move up. Together with Khairy as the Deputy, the formidable UMNO duo will have the better advantage.
Many believe that Mahathir’s camp has gotten impatient and fidgety at the slow pace of events and raring to make their move. Obviously, Najib has been signalled to resign, but an unwilling Najib is dragging his feet, savouring every last moment of the perks that comes with the job, although he knows for sure that UMNO will write him off.
UMNO Youth to the fore
Using UMNO youth to spearhead the next agenda is a strategic move on the part of the Mahathir’s camp. The Tun has warned UMNO before, that it has to retire its aging leaders and replace them with young blood in order for the party to remain relevant.
A Hishamuddin-Khairy combo would be formidable and would make the Malays and the fence sitters sit up in full attention and would give UMNO the required boost to face the next election.
Such a scenario would mean the end of the Mahathir-Khairy feud, and that the old man is willing to endorse the latter. Besides, Mahathir is too old to keep on currying any more enemies and making use of UMNO Youth is like trying to kill two birds with one stone.
As for Najib, there is nothing more for him to lose, and he can afford to bide his time and dawdle until the heat becomes uncomfortable, before handing the reins over to his cousin.
With Hishamuddin as the CEO, his future until his golden years would be more or less secured. He would be made a Tun and attempts to nail him for his past misdeeds would be futile.
Now, comes the big question?
If Najib has to go, the next in line would be Muhyiddin Yassin. At the moment, Muhyiddin seems to be in a dormant mood, keeping a low profile, fatigue as in the words of Kadir Jassin, too tired and has expressed his wishes to call it quits from all Official posts.
What about Zahid Hamidi an UMNO VP who garnered the majority of votes, when even Hishamuddin was seen to be in danger of losing the VP post? Would he be ignored when lately, he has tried very hard to prove his mettle among UMNO circles, that he was the man to be reckoned with?
Would Zahid be able to corner Hishamuddin and give him a run for his money, since he too does not lack any grassroots support?
And what will it take to persuade Zahid to back down? Most people believe that Zahid will not go down without a fight. Currently, he is in a commanding position, advantageously poised to fill the post, should Muhyiddin shun it. So he would be the biggest thorn in the political gambit, and it would be interesting to see how UMNO can overcome it.
Will Zahid be asked to make the ultimate sacrifice for the common good of the party and back down? Muhyiddin would have also been consulted before and has accepted the inevitable; that’s why he refused to go for the UMNO President post in the last party election.
Toying with the idea of a Zahid-Mukhriz alliance to neutralize the Hishamuddin/Khairy combo would only lead to disastrous feuds that will see the destruction of the party, and would be avoided if Mahathir’s camp wants to fast track its agenda.
There is simply no slot available for poor Zahid, unless UMNO creates a passive President post to calm him down. So, one cannot count out a Zahid/Mukhriz vs Hishamuddin/Khairy feud in the battle of the giants in the near future
Will UMNO endorse Khairy?
It will be plain sailing and little resistance for Hishamuddin to be the next PM from UMNO, but we cannot say the same for Khairy and the DPM post.
How would UMNO veterans react to Khairy’s candidacy for DPM? During the PM Badawi’s years, Khairy and the 4th floor boys have spooked a lot of UMNO leaders by keeping tabs on party leaders down to the grassroots which created a lot of fear and wariness of him.
Will he stand a chance to get the endorsement from UMNO veterans whom he has offended in the past? Will they still consider him a threat or will they give him the green light?
With that aside, Khairy does seem to have nationwide appeal among the Malay Youth, who sees him as confident, affirmative, charismatic, intelligent and a go getter with excellent oratorical skills.
Everyone remembers Khairy’s confident boast, that he would be Prime Minister by the time he touches 40years old. And with Khairy snugly in the DPM’s seat, silently concocting more elaborate schemes to tighten BN’s strangle-hold on the country, UMNO can afford to relax.
Would there by rivalry?
It would not be impossible for Hishamuddin to work with Khairy, as they were once colleagues when Hishamuddin was UMNO Youth leader and Khairy his deputy. But would Hishamuddin be comfortable working with him or will there be silent rivalry?
Sooner of later, one of them will have to abdicate for the ‘young and well groomed prince or papa’s boy’ Mukhriz to take his rightful position in the grand scheme of things, unless he is willing to wait another decade of which Mahathir wont be around to admire his creation.
But Khairy has not remained docile in the last few years, but has been working very hard to shore up his position as the current Youth leader and a Full Minister, and today his political position is as solid as a rock.
Fast forwarding younger leaders to the PM post by bypassing Muhyiddin and Zahid will definitely be a boon for young Mukhriz who will ensure that Mahathir’s legacy remain intact in the annals of Malaysian politics.
With the current political deadlock and the possible break up of the Pakatan Rakyat, with PAS conservatives siding BN and a handful of PAS progressive leaders leaning towards PR, the Opposition Coalition would probably be in tatters and too weak to regroup to face the next GE14.
If Anwar is incarcerated in the near future, some PKR leaders will see no reason to continue flogging a dead horse, and may quietly return to UMNO to revive their fortunes. Technically, BN will regain their two thirds majority and may even hold early elections to bury the Opposition pact once and for all.
So, ladies and gentlemen, should the rumble become louder, and the earth starts to shake, we are in for another grand fireworks show with lots of sparkle. Have your Coke and popcorn ready! - MAILBAG
