Sabah, Sarawak ignored in fuel price hike

Penampang MP says reduction in fuel subsidies will negatively impact public transportation which is the very lifeline of the people.
petrol-upKOTA KINABALU: Penampang MP Darell Leiking cannot believe that component parties of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) in Sabah and Sarawak were consulted on Thursday’s fuel price hike and, if so, that they agreed.
So much for Sabah and Sarawak being equal partners with the peninsula in the Federation, pointed out Darell.
“Everything is happening at the wrong time,” he said and cited the World Bank which classified Sabah in December 2010 as the poorest in Malaysia.
“The people in Sabah and Sarawak are already struggling with the effects of the last fuel price increase, the Cabotage Policy, and soon they will be hit by the GST. All these will cause an unprecedented chain reaction.”
The reduction in fuel subsidies by 0.20 sen per litre, warned the Sabah MP, would hit the public transportation system which is the very lifeline of the people.
Already, before the current fuel price increase, villagers from the Upper Moyog Penampang had to fork out between RM5 and RM7 every time they went to Donggongon, the nearest town in the outskirts of greater Kota Kinabalu.
“Ironically, Sabah is the one of the major contributors to the Federal Government’s coffers through petroleum revenue, tourism, agriculture and human capital,” pointed out Darell.
The Penampang MP urged BN parties in Borneo to get away from their role of delivering seats to Umno in Putrajaya and discuss with the Federal Government how the impact of repeated fuel price increases on the people in Borneo could be minimised.
