Tamrin the FIRST CASAULTY of Hadi's Pakatan volte-face? Ghafar's son may quit as ulama harden grip
PAS's internal discord over the Selangor menteri besar impasse and its cooperation with Pakatan Rakyat allies may have set the stage for the possible departure of a prized member, former Umno veteran Datuk Tamrin Ghafar.
According to Tamrin’s close associates, the former Mara chairman had mentioned his desire to leave the Islamist party several times.
“When I asked him whether it’s true or not, and when he will leave, he replied that he is still looking for the right typewriter to type out his letter,” a friend of Tamrin's told The Malaysian Insider.
Attempts to contact Tamrin to confirm his rumoured departure have been unsuccessful.
Tamrin, who joined PAS in August 2012, is said to be unhappy with the direction the party is taking, particularly over the Selangor menteri besar imbroglio.
Tamrin, the son of former deputy prime minister Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba, had previously said that he joined PAS because he was confident it would be a good alternative party for Malaysia's future.
He had ruled out any possibility of returning to Umno, calling the Malay-based party a lost cause.
Tamrin, the second of Ghafar's 11 children, had been supportive of Pakatan Rakyat for some time before joining PAS because he believed Umno had deviated from its original struggle. As a result of his public criticism of Umno, the party's disciplinary board issued him a showcause letter before he quit to join PAS.
Tamrin was the MP for Batu Berendam in Malacca from 1986 to 1995. The constituency has since been renamed Bukit Katil.
His decision to join PAS was a coup of sorts for the Islamist party, given his own Umno credentials and that his father had been an Umno strongman and the deputy prime minister.
Tamrin was seen in Parliament recently when the Dewan Rakyat resumed its current sitting this week. He was there to meet PAS and other Pakatan Rakyat members, as well as a few Umno MPs.

Among the parliamentarians he met were Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar (Tumpat), Mohamed Hanipa Maidin (Sepang), Khalid Samad (Shah Alam) and Tian Chua (Batu).
They dined at the Parliament cafeteria and their meal was paid for by Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan.
“Is this a farewell?” one of them joked, to which Tamrin replied, “I don’t know”.
Last year, Tamrin was detained after he participated in a May 13 forum at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.
During the forum, he had suggested that a civil society group called Gerakan Anti Perkauman (anti-racism movement or GAP) be set up to monitor racist statements, and urged all Malaysians who loved peace and unity to join.
“Let us form an NGO called Gerakan Anti Perkauman soon, comprising members who love peace.
“We will initiate it and involve lawyers who shall investigate leaders that utter racist statements,” he said.
Ten days after the forum, Tamrin along with Tian Chua and political activist Haris Ibrahim were arrested under the Sedition Act 1948 and were held at the Jinjang police station on May 23.
They were released after the magistrate refused to extend their remand, but were re-arrested by the police on May 28.
On Friday, he was ordered to enter his defence to the sedition charge.
GAP's official launch is said to be held soon, and it has attracted Datuk Mujahid Yusof Rawa of PAS and Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah of Umno, as well as activists from Sabah and Sarawak. –TMI
