Teresa Kok grills Mary Yap: Are we producing top scorers who are mere BOOKWORMS?
It was reported in today’s media that the Deputy Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap said at a Kuching function yesterday that many top students including those with all As result had failed to gain admission into universalities because they had failed in their oral interviews.
She said that she had received a case report where a 10 A scorer, who wished to take up A level programme and applied for scholarship, did not even know the name of Malaysian Prime Minister when asked at the oral interview.
She further said that when the student was asked if he was prepared to return to serve in Malaysia upon graduation if scholarship was granted to him, the answer was no.
She said that oral interview is a very important part of the selection process and advised applicants to be well prepared for interview.
Top students failing to gain admission into their preferred courses at public universities has been a perennial issue. Although poor oral interview performance has always been cited by the authorities as a reason for this phenomenon, there has always been much public skepticism towards such an explanation.

As such, if the Education Ministry wants the public and students to accept the explanation, it should be more transparent and reveal more details how applicants have failed in their interview, rather than citing an extreme and isolated case.
However, if many top scores have failed their oral interviews just like the case cited by Mary Yap, where it is obvious that the student is a mere bookworm , then the Ministry must look into the bigger question of the weakness that exists in our education system—why is our education system producing top scorers who are bookworms?
The Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin has said before about improving our education system and raising it to world class standard. How could this be achieved if many of our top scorers lack the basic general knowledge to do well in oral interview?
It has to be noted that Malaysia’s education weakness is not confined to just the secondary school level.
In a news report published two years ago, the following was reported:
“ Graduates emerging from the Malaysian education system fail to meet the expectations of prospective employers due to a lack of critical thinking skills and poor communication.
This has resulted in employers having to provide additional training to fit them into their respective job scopes. Many graduates also have to accept employment that does not correspond with their qualifications.
Muhyiddin yassin
Malaysian-based education, human resource and recruitment consultants feel that there should be a sound foundation in critical thinking to be incorporated into the education system to prepare future generations for the employment market.”
Sufficient quality human power is necessary for a developed nation and the government must therefore ensure that the weaknesses in our education system, at both the secondary school and university levels, are effectively addressed and resolved. -HARAKAHDAILY
