What’s the Sabah govt’s stand on the highway?

UEM-MMC securing the project is just another wealth enrichment exercise to benefit a few at the top.
pan-borneo-higwayKOTA KINABALU: Sri Tanjung Assemblyman Chan Foong Hin wants to know the Sabah Government’s stand on Kalabakan MP Abdul Ghapur Salleh alleging in Parliament last week that the Sabah stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway had been awarded to the Peninsula Malaysia-based UEM-MMC Consortium.
Chan also noted that the Sarawak stretch of the same highway was secured by local companies.
Chan, who is also the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sabah vice chairman, believes the Sabah Cabinet cannot be totally in the dark about the RM27 billion project which stretches 1,633 km from Lundu in Sarawak to Tawau in Sabah.
“Do we need to help the super-rich Malays to increase the community’s market equity share?” asked Chan in commenting on Ghapur’s allegations in Parliament. “Will the privatisation of the Pan Borneo Highway be beneficial to the bottom group of the Malays?”
He argued that UEM-MMC securing the project would not help re-distribute the wealth within the Malay community. Instead, the award appears to be just another wealth enrichment exercise to benefit the few at the top.
The North South Highway in Peninsular Malaysia was built and operated by PLUS, a member of the UEM Group, pointed out Chan. “It has collected billions of toll fees since the 80s.”
Among other details on the deal favouring the top, Chan said that MMC led by Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary is already involved in the construction of the MRT in Kuala Lumpur in a joint venture with Gamuda Berhad, linked to the Perak royal family.
Syed Mokhtar is the richest Malay corporate figure in Malaysia, the 8th richest Malaysian according to Forbes Magazine, presiding over an empire that includes power plants, ports, plantations, car factories, and rail, mail, rice, sugar and defence supplies.
Forbes estimates his net worth at US$2.75 billion.
