With MRT up, why still splurge billions on Kidex, new highways - Azmin grills Putrajaya
KUALA LUMPUR - Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali asked today if the four new highways announced in Budget 2015 and the proposed Kidex expressway was corroboration of claims that the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project is headed for failure.
Azmin pointed to the incongruity of building an extensive rail network to cut traffic and raise public transport usage, while adding RM16 billion in highways that will do the opposite.
“Does the Kidex construction justify claims that the government had failed in building the MRT?” Azmin said during the debate of Budget 2015 in Parliament here today.
“Now, they have to spend so much money for the same purpose. That’s why we suggest that in such development projects, the state government should be included in discussions and the residents living in the affected areas should also be directly involved,” the Gombak MP added.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced during the tabling of Budget 2015 last Friday that work will start on four new highways next year.
These are the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Expressway (SUKE) at RM5.3 billion, the 276km West Coast Expressway from Taiping to Banting costing RM5 billion, the 47km Damansara-Shah Alam Highway (DASH) at RM4.2 billion and the 36km Eastern Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) costing RM1.6 billion.
Shortly after assuming office, Azmin said recently he would review all Selangor highway project proposals, including the controversial RM2.34 billion Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex).
Kidex was not included in the Budget announcement ostensibly because it will be an entirely private project.
The proposed highway is also currently not incorporated in the local council blueprint for Petaling Jaya.
Despite the growing opposition, mounting evidence in the form of replies in Parliament and the state legislative assembly indicate that the project is set to proceed.
The MRT is the country’s largest infrastructure project to date. In Budget 2015, Putrajaya also announced it will begin construction on the second line running from Selayang to Putrajaya at an estimated cost of RM23 billion. -Malay Mail
