Zainuddin’s ‘pendatang’ rant is baseless

Chinese leaders are indignant that former minister says Chinese deserve being called 'pendatang'.
Tan Keng LiangKUALA LUMPUR: Chinese leaders from various political parties have stated their outright indignation at former information minister Zainuddin Maidin for saying the Chinese in Malaysia were called “pendatang” only because they “built walls” and couldn’t assimilate with the Malays since they refused to learn Bahasa Malaysia.
In an interview with FMT, Gerakan Youth Chief Tan Keng Liang said that in his personal opinion, many Chinese could speak Bahasa Malaysia well.
Tan also said speaking Bahasa Malaysia was not an issue among the Chinese and that it was only people like Zainuddin who made it a political and racial issue.
He also vehemently disagreed that the Chinese refused to assimilate with the Malays while lamenting how this argument had always been used against the Chinese community.
Meanwhile Gerakan vice president Dominic Lau said the Chinese never questioned the status of Bahasa Malaysia as the country’s national language and that most, if not all, Chinese could speak Bahasa Malaysia.
“The Chinese have never questioned the status of Bahasa Malaysia as the country’s official language. Neither did they question Islam as the country’s official religion.
“It is always the Malays who raise these issues,” he added.
Lau also said the right to learn Chinese was guaranteed in the Federal Constitution.
MP for Serdang Ong Kian Ming said the various races in Malaysia have integrated well with each other and that the issue of the Chinese preferring “self isolation” and refusing to learn Bahasa Malaysia was totally unacceptable.
The DAP leader also said many Chinese had passed Malay language examinations without it being an issue.
Meanwhile MCA Religious Harmony Bureau Chairman Ti Lian Ker was of the opinion that whatever Zainuddin said had little bearing on current issues as it didn’t provide any healthy solutions.
Ti also said Zainuddin had never understood the root cause of the problems the Chinese faced.
He added, “It would be best to ignore Zainuddin instead of joining in any racially-laced arguments with him. Best to shun him altogether.”
