UMNO MUSICAL CHAIRS: Dr M tells Najib to make way for others, Najib tells others to make way

UMNO MUSICAL CHAIRS: Dr M tells Najib to make way for others, Najib tells others to make way
A LOT of noise and very little, if there was any, change. This is Umno, the aging nationalist party that badly needs rejuvenation to stay relevant among Malaysia’s electorates.
Refusing to adopt change is, by the way, not the only malady that is destroying the party. It is as serious and notorious as money politics and sabotage that are making Umno lethargic.
Umno thinkers have long been acutely aware of the party’s conservatism and resistance to change.
Past leaders were not oblivious of the fact that the party needs young blood; that the culture of obstructing the rise of young and new talents among serving leaders from top down is very much alive despite the party having taken measures to facilitate registration of new members.
Many could recall how their applications to join Umno at the branch and division levels were rejected because the incumbent leaders feared losing their positions to applicants who were obviously more talented and qualified than themselves.
Since membership applications are now also handled by the party’s headquarters, it is still impossible for members, who do not get the blessings of local Umno warlords, to serve the people on the ground on Umno’s platform.
Quite a number of former Umno leaders had from time to time, spoken about old leaders making way, allowing young people to take their place.
Of course such advice has always been like water off a duck’s back to old timers.
The local warlords continue to overstay, some holding the divisional posts for decades while the leadership at state and federal levels continues to make up of old, tired faces who are outdated and detached from people on the ground.
Even the Umno Youth movement, which is there to groom new leaders of Umno, is filled with ageing youths, making the party unattractive to young educated Malay men.
Forty is in fact already too old for anyone to be in a youth movement; having a leader who is way above 40 is simply ridiculous.
Current Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin is just below forty and into his second term in office; he is keen to work to ensure the movement is really one for young people from top down, but many who are older than him think they still deserve to lead the movement.
Hopefully suggestions that the age of the Umno Youth leader be capped at 40 years would be taken seriously to ensure the movement continues to be led by a really young man, not a man old enough to become a father or grandfather of young members.
Among those who are passionate about the need to inject young blood into Umno is Pulai Member of Parliament Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
Not too long ago, he suggested that the age limit of Umno youth chief be set at 40 to ensure a flow of younger generation of leaders to the party.
Nur Jazlan argued that an injection of younger blood would give Umno a fresher outlook and image, which in turn would attract the younger generation to join the party.
Former Umno president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his former deputy Tun Musa Hitam were among those who had suggested older leaders make way for new blood to allow Umno to rejuvenate lest the party became increasingly divorced from society.
Now it is current Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s turn to make a similar suggestion which he made at the Johor Umno convention on Friday.
Reprimanding some party leaders who obstructed the young and professionals from joining and contributing to the party, the Prime Minister had urged aged members to make room for new members and those in their twilight years to take a bow to enable Umno to become energetic.
“When we talk about talent, we must find young people with calibre and who are capable. But if they are stopped, obstructed and kicked when they are climbing up the party ladder, no young talent would want to join our party.
“Let the youth see that Umno is a party that is dynamic, fresh, and is appreciative of those who are worthy,” Najib said.
Will the Umno president’s advice remain just that?
The next Umno internal elections will confirm if this is so.
If old timers continue to defend their positions, than Umno is at risk of being rejected by more young electorates at GE14. -http://www.therakyatpost.com
