BANGI - It is difficult for the government to implement the three-tier fuel subsidy system as certain quarters of the population might not want to reveal their monthly income.
Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said another alternative to the subsidy system is for Malaysians to use their identity cards or pay the full amount of fuel before claiming for the subsidy at the end of each month.
"If they're local, then they're entitled for subsidy and if they're not, then they have to pay for the full amount," Mahathir said at a press conference after officiating at the National University of Malaysia Fifth International Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities here today.
(For the first tier, individuals with salary below RM5,000 will get 100% subsidy, tier two is for those with low- to middle-income who will get a partial subsidy, and those in tier three earning above RM10,000 will not get the subsidy.)
Mahathir said the government needs to reduce the fuel subsidy without burdening the poor.
"It seems like the government is still formulating the best plan to implement the new subsidy scheme; that's why many people have come up with statements on how the new fuel subsidy system would be like," he said.
"It is up to the government on how to implement the new system. If it decides for something people don't like, it will lose in the next (general) election," he added. -Sundaily
