“Cowards” harassing those erecting Oath Stone replica

DAP Sabah warns Barisan Nasional and Native Chiefs to stop their “political gangsterism”.
Chan-Foong-batu sumpah_300KOTA KINABALU: The Democratic Action Party (DAP) is not put off by the “challenges” it is facing in erecting replicas of the Keningau Oath Stone (Oath Stone) in Sabah because it has “the support of the people”.
DAP Sabah Vice Chief Chan Foong Hin conceded that problems had occurred in Inanam and Sook where the replica Oath Stone had been erected.
In Kiansom, Inanam, Edward Liaw, the land owner where the replica of the Oath Stone was erected was summoned by the village chief to attend a hearing where he was penalised and ordered to pay a fine in the form of one buffalo for “going against native customs”.
“On what basis did the village chief find the erection of the Oath Stone replica in Kiansom as not obeying native custom?” asked Chan.
One day after the erection of another Oath Stone replica in Kampung Mempulut, Sook, Pensiangan, the land owner, Ambalas Ambirau, disclosed that his house was trespassed by several people who claimed they were from Barisan Nasional (BN).
According to Chan, a day earlier on December 10, the ceremony was witnessed by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, DAP Sabah Chief cum MP for Kota Kinabalu Jimmy Wong and himself as well as about 200 people.
The next day, Ambalas alleged the group of men entered his house and one of them punched a woman who was there.
“Ambalas has lodged a police report in Keningau but the DAP supporters still worry about their safety,” said Chan.
Chan warned that any party which practises “political gangsterism definitely would fail to command the respect of most moderate Malaysians, especially the Orang Asal as these two incidents related to the Oath Stone.
“Cowards will always feel inferior and they will do something stupid. They will sometimes also use force. DAP Sabah condemns the rise of political gangsterism,” he said.
He also condemned the action of the BN, saying it had disgraced itself and Sabah.
“The question most puzzling me is, why are the Orang Asal component parties of BN afraid of the erection of Oath Stone replicas?” Chan asked.
The original Batu Sumpah, a constitutional document, is in Keningau. It lists three of the main conditions for Sabah and Sarawak to be in Federation with the peninsula viz. no religion, land a state matter and respect for the Orang Asal culture, customs and traditions.
