Let other races use ALLAH - Anwar unmoved despite withdrawal of Datukship 'for not defending Islam'
GEORGE TOWN - Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said one of the reasons the Selangor palace withdrew his “Datuk Seri” title was that he did not “defend Islam” especially in the controversial Allah issue.
The opposition leader said he does not want to make an issue of the Selangor Sultan’s decision to revoke the award other than to state the reasons behind it.
“The reason given, amongst other things, is that I’ve not supported... that I was not defending Islam, particularly on the issue of Allah,” he said.
He then defiantly reiterated his stand on the controversial issue, saying that there is no right by any Muslim or authority to deny any group the use of the word “Allah”, the Arabic word for God.
“If that caused me a datukship, I think I have eight more to go around,” he said jokingly to applause when giving a speech at a human rights and local democracy event here.
Last week, Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Shah revoked Anwar’s datukship effective November 3 because the PKR de facto leader had repeatedly disputed the ruler over the state’s mentri besar crisis since 2013.
Anwar still has other datukships awarded to him by other states, namely Perlis, Perak, Sabah, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Malacca and Pahang.
Muslims and Christians in Malaysia remain locked in a unique tussle over “Allah”, which the former group considers exclusive to Islam despite the word being used by the Christian Bumiputera communities in Sabah and Sarawak for decades.
The dispute started when the Catholic Church challenged the Home Ministry in 2008 for prohibiting its use of “Allah” in the Herald.
The case came to a conclusion this June when the Federal Court refused to hear the Catholic Church’s appeal against an appellate court decision upholding the ban.
The Catholic Church is applying, however, for the Federal Court to review its decision. -Malay Mail
