Media told to avoid publishing racist reports

Minister Joseph Kurup says media should adopt a proactive stance and adhere to ethics when disseminating information to the people.
joseph kuruo_racism_300KOTA KINABALU: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Joseph Kurup has advised the media to avoid reports carrying racist and religious-sensitive content so as to maintain peace and harmony in the country.
He said the media should adopt a proactive stance and adhere to ethics when disseminating information on solidarity to the people.
“By writing comprehensive news, features and articles on solidarity, the media can provide value added to strengthen understanding and awareness in the people, particularly youths, on the importance of maintaining stability and peace,” he said.
Kurup said this at a meeting with Sabah media last night in an event organised by the Sabah Department of National Unity and Integration.
He said the government appreciated the efforts of all the print and electronic media in providing ample space for the dissemination of information and news on racial unity and harmony.
Kurup said that as ‘partners in unity’ in ensuring the success of the government’s national unification effort, the media should always ensure that it delivered every message responsibly and effectively.
