One of two former police commandos accused of murdering Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu eight years ago today failed to appear in the Federal Court which delivered its verdict on whether to allow the prosecution's appeal to acquit them.
His lead counsel Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin told the five-man panel of judges that Sirul Azhar Umar could not be contacted.
Despite Sirul's absence, the panel led by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria this morning sentenced the commandos to death at the court in Putrajaya.
Sirul, 43, who was a former corporal, was charged with Altantuya's murder in 2006 along with 39-year-old former chief inspector Azilah Hadri.
Both were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Judge Tengku Maimun Tengku Mat, who delivered the written grounds at that time, said the two should have been freed without their defence called.
