Evict or the council knows what to do

The iconic Line Clear eatery gets a cryptic eviction notice.
line clear nasi kandarGEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) has issued a cryptic ultimatum to the current operator of Line Clear, a popular nasi kandar stall in Penang Road. The ultimatum is, “Evict or the council knows what to do.”
The iconic eatery has been in operation since the 1930s. Its current operator, Abdul Hamid Seeni Pakir, has not obtained a permit for this year.
MPPP enforcement officers moved in on Monday to seize tables and chairs, the idea being to cripple the business. Regular patrons have criticised the action as hasty and harsh.
But MPPP president Patahiyah Ismail said the council had no choice but to take action because Abdul Hamid was adamantly operating without a licence.
“But there are no plans to close down the nasi kandar stall,” she said at a press conference here today.
She said the council was now holding meetings with all affected parties to resolve a dispute over ownership of the business.
There is a fight between four cousins – Abdul Hamid, Abdul Latiff Thulkarunai, Sahubarali China Mohd Hanibah and Pathumah Iskandar – over who should be currently operating the business.
There was an agreement amongst themselves that allowed Abdul Hamid to run the business between 2008 and 2010. But the agreement also specified that from 2011 onwards, the ownership would be on yearly rotation.
It was Sahubarali’s turn to take over in 2011, but Abdul Hamid refused to hand over the site and has not done so until today.
In accordance with the agreement between the cousins, the council has been issuing its licence to a different cousin each year. Abdul Hamid had his licence last year and will get it again in 2018. This year’s licence is for Abdul Latiff.
Although the tables and chairs have been seized, Abdul Hamid resumed business yesterday and was still entertaining his patrons today.
Asked to comment on this, Patahiyah explained that it was not possible for the MPPP to clear out the Line Clear business. “MPPP can only cripple the business by making it hard to operate,” she said.
The council is trying to resolve the issue amicably.
“We’re seen as the baddie, but we’re just doing our part to get the problem settled,” said Patahiyah.
