Despite heavy downpour, 200 people at Dataran Petaling Jaya today were in good spirits as they took part in a walk to symbolise an effort to restore peace and unity among different races and religions in Malaysia.
The rain did little to dampen their mood to continue the Muhibah Walk this evening, aptly themed 'Faces Without Races', which also saw activists such as Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir and Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan joining the event.
Ambiga, who addressed the crowd in the pouring rain before kicking off the walk, said that she was proud of the youths' participation in making a stand for unity.
"If the youths do not make a stand for unity, who will? You are doing this for your future."
The walk today was organised by The Movement, a youth wing under non-governmental organisation, Vision 2 Transform.
This is The Movement's second walk, having organised the first one in October last year. More than 800 people attended the event.
"Muhibah Walk is our visionary way to unite Malaysians of all races. It provides us with a platform to bring Malaysians from all walks of life, young and old, to showcase that our hearts and souls connect with one another as Malaysians," project manager Janell Bani had said yesterday.
"Our diversity is our strength and it is something we can share and embrace. On a personal level, a community level, and a national level, we want to showcase that we can break down all divides and truly be a nation of faces without races.”
The participants, who were clad in blue t-shirts, took 45 minutes to walk the 2km stretch surrounding the square.
Although organisers had expected a bigger crowd, Marina said it was the spirit shown by the youths that were more important than the numbers.
"I am really proud to be here and I wish there were more of you, but it really is not about the numbers. It is about the spirit.
"Keep it going. You're all Malaysians. Keep the spirit of Malaysia burning," she said.
She reminded the youths that the country's diversity is what made Malaysia rich and powerful, the foundation in which the country was built.
"Think of more ways you can get together. We should commit ourselves to being bridge builders and peace makers.
"Thank you for the courage, hard work and spirit in your efforts to keep us all united," she added.
The event also featured a concert by local artistes such as Altimet, Manifesto and others.
