Himself trying to get son Mukhriz the PM's chair, Dr M tells Umno to 'REJECT POLITICAL DYNASTIES'
Political dynasties should not exist in Umno, sayd the party's lomg-time former leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
However, Mahathir's statement comes amid speculation that he himself is attempting to ensure that his son Mukhriz becomes prime minister in the near future.
His latest blog posting is seen as an obvious reference to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his cousin Hishammuddin Hussein, the current defence minister.
"Whoever is qualified and loves Umno deserves to be elected to all posts. Family links cannot be a basis for electing or rejecting (candidates).
"This might not be easy to do, but an attempt must be made," Mahathir said.
Najib is the son of second prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein, whereas his cousin, Hishammuddin’s father, was the third prime minister Hussein Onn.
Meanwhile, Mahathir, in another swipe at the current Umno president, also said leaders who attempt to divert the course of the party's struggle must be reprimanded.
"Umno members must be wise to tell the difference between the approach to ensure the success of Umno's struggle with the approach to change the struggle," he said.
He noted that the Malay culture is such that they do not like hurting the feelings of their leaders, but this paved the way for numerous mistakes to be committed.
Mahathir said would be best for Umno leaders who want to use the party as a platform to acquire riches and power to be on the outside.
To ascertain that Umno leaders do not reject talented new members, he proposed that a team comprising those with no vested interests be formed to do the vetting.
Those who have retired and even outsiders sympathetic with Umno could be given this task.
"Once vetted, they must be accepted by Umno and placed in the appropriate position," Mahathir added. - M'kini
