It wasn’t the buttons, it was a ‘ruling’, uncle insists

Britney’s uncle says there is no “misunderstanding” because there is a 2009 ruling that prohibits non-Malays from wearing the baju kurung to school.
Lawrence Jayaraj school SMK MutiaraKUALA LUMPUR: The uncle of non-Malay student, Britney Nicole, who was sent home because she wore a baju kurung to school, insisted there was no “misunderstanding” as the school’s principal alleged recently but an actual ruling that only Malays could wear the baju kurung uniform to school.
“I can understand but I cannot accept,” Lawrence Jayaraj, the uncle and guardian to the 15-year-old student said regarding the incident.
According to Astro Awani, Lawrence explained that the school his niece attends actually enforced a ruling in 2009 that prohibited non-Malays from wearing the baju kurung.
“There’s no misunderstanding. Actually, the policy of the school is, since 2009, they don’t want non-Malay girls to wear baju kurung, and I can understand because they gave me certain reasons,” Jayaraj said.
According to Lawrence, the school’s principal, Mohd Amir Abdul Ghani, told him that non-Malay students were told not to wear the baju kurung because it was “more revealing” than the pinafore.
Lawrence told Astro Awani, “And out of convenience’s sake, one of the teachers in charge of student affairs, came up with a ruling that non-Muslims should wear pinafore and not baju kurung.”
According to Bernama, the principal denied prohibiting non-Malay students from wearing the baju kurung but only emphasised that the attire be worn correctly.
“If they want to wear the baju kurung, the students have to wear them properly, which means buttoning up all the way. When we tell them this, they say we (the school) do not allow them to wear the baju kurung,” Mohd Amir explained.
However, with this new revelation from Lawrence, Mohd Amir refused to make any further comments when contacted by Astro Awani, except to say that a full report had been filed and forwarded to the Education Ministry for further action.
Meanwhile Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin clarified, in a statement Thursday, that his Ministry had never issued any guidelines barring non-Muslim students from wearing the “baju kurung” uniform to school.
He also advised schools not to come up with policies that were not in line with ministry guidelines.
He added, “As far we are concerned, the wearing of the baju kurung should be encouraged since its one of the national dresses.”
Lawrence also said he felt insulted when the senior assistant at the school suggested he seek financial aid through BR1M when he said he did not have the ready cash to buy the pinafore uniform the school insisted his niece wear to school.
