LEAVE GOD OUT OUT IT! Kelantan Pas must stop giving mindless excuses for the floods
God never escapes from the rulers of Kelantan. No less than the CEO of the Kelantan government has now issued a command to the Kelantanese, saying, “I am calling on the people in the state to take this as a sign from Allah”. According to him, “It is the power of Allah to bring such heavy rain in such a short time”, ie. 1,295mm of rainfall in three days. He denies allegations of uncontrolled logging and states that logging has been frozen since 2006.
Dear menteri besar, the flood waters were the colour of mountain soil. Photographs showed that all the flooded areas were covered with a thick layer of red earth. Thousands of tonnes of red earth were apparently washed down by the rains.
Whether or not logging has stopped since 2006 is questionable. What is certain is that there must be huge swaths of hillsides and mountainsides that are without the protection of vegetation, any form of vegetation, even full-grown grass. Naked soil is easily washed down by water flowing down the slopes. Of course, how much is washed down depends on the rains, but the rains are not the culprits. The more naked soil there is on the slopes, the more surface run-off there is and the more soil is washed down.
If the menteri besar is to be believed, the flood waters should have been clear, or at worst, just slightly yellowish and leaving behind very little silt or none at all.
The menteri besar would do well to find out how many thousands of acres of hillsides and mountainsides are without any kind of vegetation that can prevent rain, however heavy, washing down the soil and causing a repeat of the present floods. Even if the vegetation-less places are in small pockets and not in large areas like football fields, what matters is the total soil surface exposed directly to the rain and waters running downhill.
Rainfall, however heavy, on hills and mountains with undisturbed forests, does not result in soil-coloured waterfalls. So please stop blaming God to cover up for the activities of man that have destroyed God’s work of providing excellent soil cover on the hills and mountains that had kept the soil on the hills and mountains intact for millennia.
Destroying God’s work in the first place, then turning tables on Him for resultant calamities, should be the most irreligious thing to do for those who believe in God. – TMI
