Mukhriz steps up campaign for Kulim international airport

Part of MB's Kedah transformation plan, project is opposed by Penang as redundant.
mukriz_kulim airport_300ALOR STAR: Mukhriz Mahathir, chief booster of an international airport at Kulim, used the Sultan of Kedah’s birthday celebrations today to highlight the project as part of the “transformation” of the state.
The proposed airport has been strongly opposed by the Penang state government for being redundant, as it would be less than 50km from Penang international airport.
Mukhriz in his speech of congratulations at an investitute ceremony at Istana Anak Bukit, said the proposed Kulim airport in the Sungai Patani area, would boost the economy and improve the lives of those in rural areas.
Just as northern Kedah grew rapidly after the opening of Universiti Utara Malaysia in Sintok, similar growth would take place in southern Kedah as well as neighbouring areas, he said according to Bernama.
The area between Kulim High Technology Park and the new airport would become a manufacturing and service industry development zone, and the the people would be able to secure high-paying jobs from the manufacturing industry and airline services, located beside the airport.
He said the airport was one of six projects for the development of the state, and that “the drive for the transformation of Kedah has now begun”.
The Penang state government, which opposes the Kulim project, has asked the federal government to approve extensions and a second runway for Penang airport to cope with future growth of air traffic.
