Sikhs to get new temple in Subang Jaya, USJ

Sikhs to get new temple in Subang Jaya, USJ
SUBANG JAYA - Sikhs residing in Subang Jaya and USJ will soon have a temple of their own after a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of Gurdwara Sahib Subang in SS13 today.
Subang Sikh Association, Selangor (SSAS) president Amrick Singh said devotees in the two areas have been praying at a shophouse which lacked space to perform religious rites.
"We are a small community but there is a need (to have a temple); the closest Gurdwara Sahibs are the ones in Petaling Jaya and in Bandar Sunway, and the Sikhs in Subang Jaya have been praying in this shophouse for about 13 years," Amrick Singh told reporters after the ceremony.
Amrick Singh said SSAS, which has 600 registered members, was formed in 2002 specifically to look for a suitable plot of land for a Gurdwara Sahib to cater for about 2,000 Sikhs living in the area.
However, an application to use a plot of land next to the Subang Jaya Buddhist Association was rejected by the state government in 2003.
SSAS made a fresh application after the 12th general election and Amrick Singh said it was approved in 2012.
In February 2013, a 10,000sq ft plot of land was gazetted as a non-Islamic place of worship and building plans for the Gurdwara Sahib was approved by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) on Nov 28, 2014.
Amrick Singh said the four-storey building will include a multi-purpose carpark/open space area on the ground floor, community halls and conference rooms on the first floor, an open kitchen on the third floor, and prayer rooms on the top floor.
However, the building will cost about RM4 million and SSAS has only managed to raise RM1 million through fund-raising annual dinners, donations, and government grants.
"We will continue to seek grants from the state and federal governments but the Sikh community must chip in and help in whatever way they can in the construction of Gurdwara Sahib Subang."
He also thanked the Subang Jaya Buddhist Association for providing free water and electricity during the three-day Sri Akhand Paath ceremony to bless the building.
Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh said Subang Jaya had been a township for decades but no land had been allocated to accommodate the needs of the Sikh community.
Yeoh, who is also Selangor State legislative speaker said RM10,000 will be donated for the temple's construction.
Kelana Jaya MP Wong Chen also pledged RM1,000 from his limited MP allocation and said the Sikh community must try to raise the RM3 million as 2015 looks set to be a tough year.
Wong said he will be writing to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak to request for more grants for Gurdwara Sahib Subang. - Sundaily
