Stop lying about me, Palanivel tells MIC leaders

Accusing MIC's top office-bearers, including his deputy, of telling lies about him, party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel said he had never delegated his powers to Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam to hold meetings on the Registrar of Society's (RoS) call for fresh party polls.
Palanivel said on the advice of party lawyers, MIC was going through the proper channels to appeal against the RoS findings and to prevent the party's de-registration.
"I am aware of meetings being organised and chaired by the deputy president and others in relation to the RoS issue. I have not delegated my powers under the constitution to the deputy president or any other persons. I have not called for or sanctioned any meeting to be called for and chaired by the deputy president or any others in respect to the RoS issue.
MIC is in the throes of a crisis after RoS found irregularities in the party polls and ordered it to conduct fresh elections, sparking fears that failure to conduct fresh polls could result in the party's deregistration.
Rival factions in the party have in recent weeks battled to maintain their grip on the ethnic Indian party, which is a member of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.
Fighting within MIC intensified after Palanivel, in a move to consolidate his grip, replaced secretary-general Prakash Rao with loyalist Kumar Aaman, and dropped former loyalists Tan Sri K S Nijhar, Datuk R Ramanan, as well as Datuk Sri S Vell Paari, who is the son of former party president and trustee Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu.
Palanivel had previously urged those who were making "untrue and derogatory" remarks and allegations about him to stop but he noted today that it has not happened.
The RoS, he said, had issued several recommendations to the party in December following allegations by several leaders but the issue has been shown in a different light to the media.
"I, as the president of MIC, took immediate steps to protect the interest and rights of MIC, contrary to the allegations leveled against me that I have done nothing. We had immediately appointed lawyers to look into these issues and we have, on the advice of lawyers, issued a letter seeking clarifications and raised certain issues with the RoS," he added.
In return, the RoS had replied in a letter dated December 31, 2014 and served a notice to MIC under Section 16(1) of the Societies Act, 1966 that a dispute had arisen on the identity of the office-bearers of MIC elections for the posts of vice presidents and the Central Working Committee held in 2013.
"Our lawyers have perused the letter in detail including all the matters raised by the RoS and have advised me that the purported notice issued by RoS is flawed and wrong in law. I am not able to give more details as it may prejudice MIC’s rights," Palanivel said.
The MIC has since appealed to the Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over the contents of the letters from the RoS.
"We are currently waiting for the reply from the Minister on MIC’s appeal. Depending on the outcome of the appeal, MIC will take the next step or course of action," he said.
Palanivel's man, party secretary-general Datuk G Kumar Aaman, began a hunger strike yesterday to protest the RoS decision and said that he would continue with the strike until Zahid intervenes.
The MIC president also slammed those who were taking advantage of the situation to gain political mileage by creating fear among party members that it would be deregistered within 90 days from December 31, 2014 if there was no re-election.
"I would like to once again assure all that we will not in any way allow such deregistration to take place.
"But everyone is making allegations and comments in the media as well as in meetings with division leaders as though they are legal experts, more so without knowing the full facts. This must stop immediately. I once again and for the last time urge all parties concerned to stop making untrue allegations and stop confusing the members to gain personal mileage,” he said.
Palanivel also sought to assure members over the MIC's problems, saying that he and the party's legal team were "vigorously" pursuing the matter through proper channels.
"It is not that I have done nothing in respect of the RoS matter as alleged by all those making untrue allegations against me, I have done everything to protect the rights and interests of MIC, which I will continue to do.
"The only thing that I have not done is to discuss the party’s internal matters in the media as is being done by the others, including the deputy president and one of the vice presidents," he added.
