“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22

That verse from the Bible never did sit well with me. I remember having discussions about it with women in the Bible study groups that I used to attend and with friends who were married. - end quote.

My comments : Let me say this to everyone especially those who have doubts about the Quran (whether you are Muslim or non Muslim).

A lot of the things that the West, the non Muslims, the liberals, the leftists, the rightists etc DO NOT LIKE about Islam (or even know about Islam) are simply not found in the Quran at all. Instead they are found in the Bible. This quote from Ephesians 5:22 above is another example.

I am not blaming the christians for the misbehaviour of the Muslims. I am merely pointing out a fact. What fact?

That many of the things that you do not like about Islam are not mentioned in the Quran. Period.  So your dislike of the Quran is based on your lack of knowledge of what is inside the Quran, of what is NOT inside the Quran and of what is inside the Bible. It is just lack of knowing the subject (of your dislike).

The question is if these things are NOT in the Quran, how did these ideas jump from the Bible into the teachings of the religious people?

This is another example. Here is a translation of the Quran by Ahmed Ali which handles the well known verse Surah 4:34 more accurately. (This has been known as the "wife beating" verse.

First here is Ahmed Ali's full translation.

Surah 4:34. Men are the support of women as God gives some more means than others, and because they spend of their wealth (to provide for them). So women who
are virtuous are obedient to God and guard the hidden as God has guarded it.
As for women you feel are averse, talk to them suasively; then leave them
alone in bed (without molesting them) and go to bed with them (when they are
willing). If they open out to you, do not seek an excuse for blaming them.
Surely God is sublime and great.

Ahmed Ali translates idrib (daraba) as 'go to bed with them'.

Just reproducing the last part :

"and go to bed with them. If they open out to you, do not seek an excuse for blaming them.  Surely God is sublime and great"    -   wa idriboo hunna fa-in  ata'naakum falaa tab-ghoo alayhinna sabeelan innallaaha kaana aliyyan kabeeran

The word idrib (root daraba) is used in many other verses in the Quran. Its uses in the Quran include the following :
  1. to physically strike something (Moses struck the rock)
  2. to strike out on a journey (the one who struck out on a journey..)
  3. to cover over something etc (women are told to use their garments to strike over -idrib- their bosoms)
In Ahmed Ali's explanation he also refers Arab colloqualism which uses the word darab to describe the 'male camel covering over the female'.

The context of the word daraba does not always indicate beating or physically striking something.
