ALTANTUYA MURDER: Police report lodged against Najib over killer Sirul's 'I was under orders' comment

ALTANTUYA MURDER: Police report lodged against Najib over killer Sirul's 'I was under orders' comment
KUALA LUMPUR — The prime minister’s dismissal of former police commando Sirul Azhar Umar’s claim that the latter murdered Altantuya Shaariibuu under orders has raised more questions about the 2006 killing, said PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
According to the Seri Setia assemblyman, Datuk Seri Najib Razak failed to give the matter the attention it deserved when he rejected Sirul’s assertion as nonsense earlier this week
“We find it amusing that the prime minister can dismiss Sirul’s serious statement as ‘utter rubbish.’ It raises so many questions,” Nik Nazmi told Malay Mail Online after lodging a police report on the case at the Dang Wangi police station.
“When you’re talking about the statement of a person on death row (in) a high-profile murder case, and also the fact that the officers that have been named in this case have been linked to Datuk Seri Najib,” he added, after urging police to reopen their investigations.
Now detained in Australia, Sirul claimed that the Federal Court should have called his then-superior, deputy superintendent Musa Safri, to testify.
Musa had been Najib’s aide-de-camp during the latter’s time as deputy prime minister.
Today, Nik Nazmi said that a retrial of the Altantuya murder case should be held in the event Sirul divulges new information.
“It has happened before in Malaysia, where people who have been convicted of murder, when new evidence emerges, a retrial took place, and the person who was earlier convicted was then acquitted,” he said.
After lodging the report, Nik Nazmi later went to the nearby Sogo shopping centre where he spoke to a crowd of 100 or so people about the Altantuya case in addition to other issues.
On Thursday, Najib described as “rubbish” Sirul’s latest claim that he was acting under orders when he killed Altantuya in 2006.
Sirul’s assertion has prompted opposition lawmakers to press the police to renew their scrutiny of the case, but Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar later said the former commando has revealed nothing that warranted a fresh probe.
Sirul and former chief Inspector Azilah Hadri were charged with the murder of 28-year-old Altantuya in 2006 and convicted in 2009.
They were freed after the appellate court acquitted them in 2013, but the Federal Court reversed the acquittal last month and sent them back to the gallows, marking the end of the eight-year saga.
Sirul left for Australia prior to the Federal Court decision and is currently held there following an Interpol Red Notice that was issued pursuant to Malaysia’s request.
Malaysia’s attempt to extradite him is currently frustrated by an Australian law that prohibits the country from sending an individual home to face the death penalty. - Malay Mail
