A DAP lawmaker has challenged Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to come after him, after the inspector-general of police issued a public warning against raising the issue of motive in the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu.
Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo, who is among those who have demanded answers for the Mongolian's killing, said Khalid should not be issuing such threats and instead respect the people's right to question the case.
The DAP national legal bureau secretary said it was a matter of public interest and that Khalid, as Malaysia's top cop, should answer their questions on the motive behind Altantuya's murder.
"If the IGP cannot take the pressure of questions any longer, and if he thinks he can get me for asking, for carrying out my duties as an MP, l dare him to come. I will take him on," said Gobind in a statement today.
Khalid yesterday told reporters that there was nothing more to say on the case as the Federal Court had already decided.
"And I am warning those who wish to comment further because there may be contempt (of court)," he told journalists in Putrajaya.
Gobind said many questioned the motive of Altantuya's murder, which remained a mystery despite the Federal Court's decision to sentence two former police commandos to death over her killing.
"Many have questioned. Members of the public have questioned. Journalists have questioned. Lawyers have questioned. Lim Kit Siang has questioned. And I have questioned. Is he warning all of us?
"For if he is, let me tell him, don't play the fool with me. Don't warn or threaten us."
He added that as an MP, it was his duty to question and he would not quit until he received an answer.
Gobind urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on Sunday to clear the air and compel the police to conduct full and open investigations into the motive behind Altantuya's murder.
He said the IGP must come clean on these matters and find out whether any separate investigation was done into the motive of the case and brought forward to the public prosecutor.
Gelang Patah MP and DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang (pic, left) said although the courts did not establish a motive for Altantuya's murder, Khalid had a duty to find out why two former elite policemen had killed her.
Lim said the least a “responsible and conscientious” IGP should do after the completion of the murder trial would be to launch a thorough inquiry to ascertain why Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar and former Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri murdered Altantuya in 2006.
Suaram advisor Dr Kua Kia Soong also requested for a full public inquiry into the Altantuya murder and the motive for her murder on Friday.
He said the prosecution of the case has been tardy from the start, with the failure to establish the motive for Altantuya’s murder, the most questionable of all.
