A 14-year-old Malaysian girl on her way to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) militant was detained by police at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday.

Inspector-general of police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the girl was intending to go to Syria via Egypt for "jihad".

"She wanted to join the 'jihad' in Syria, she was influenced by propaganda on Facebook,” he said.

When asked for details of the girl’s background and whether her parents knew about her plans to join Isis and the arrest, Khalid said police were investigating.

"We believe she has contacts or friends there who influenced her and made her excited about going there (Syria)."

Khalid said the girl was arrested under the Penal Code and the investigation was being carried out under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

He said the teenager’s attempted departure to join Isis was not a good sign, adding that parents needed to monitor and ensure their children were not influenced by Isis propaganda.

"Parents need to monitor, if a 14-year-old has been influenced by Isis propaganda, this is not a good sign."
Since early last year, police have arrested more than 20 people in various parts of Malaysia over alleged links to the terror group.
Thirty-nine Malaysians have been officially identified as being involved with Isis in Syria, whose aim is to set up an Islamic caliphate in the region.

A few Malaysian women reportedly went last year to Syria and Iraq to engage in "jihad al-nikah" or "conjugal jihad" for fighters there.
