MIC must hold fresh party elections by July this year to avoid being deregistered by the Registrar of Societies (RoS), Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.
The Indian component party of Barisan Nasional was ordered by the RoS to conduct re-elections for all their branches, wings, divisions and central leadership.
Zahid said the elections had to be held to ensure the dispute in the election of its office bearers could be solved.
The central working committee members who were appointed in 2009 will act as interim CWC until the election process is completed.
Only the voter list and branches that were formed in 2012 can be used for the re-election.
MIC also needs to submit the list of all branches and divisions to the RoS within the stipulated time.
If MIC fails to hold the elections by the date stipulated by the RoS, it could be deregistered under Section 13 of the Societies Act 1966.
"RoS's decision to ask MIC to hold re-elections is seen as a more practical approach to solve the the dispute comprehensively," said Zahid.
On claims that the RoS was being selective to certain parties involved in the re-elections, Zahid said if there was any basis to the allegations, the police would conduct investigations.
"I have scrutinised all investigation papers by RoS, based on what has been decided, it does not side any party," he said, adding that the RoS had done its job professionally on the matter.
On the meeting between the prime minister and MIC leaders which Zahid had also attended, the home minister said Datuk Seri Najib Razak had emphasised that he wanted the party to solve its problems amicably, and for it to function again and support BN.
"I have communicated with Datuk Palanivel and Datuk Subramaniam, both are my friends, and I acted based on the advice from the RoS."
MIC has been in crisis since the RoS found irregularities in the party polls and ordered it to conduct fresh elections.
The RoS directive also sparked fears that failure to conduct fresh polls would result in the party's deregistration.
MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam and vice-president Datuk M. Saravanan had urged party president Datuk G. Palanivel to respond to the RoS findings that the elections of its central working committee members in 2013 were problematic and that fresh polls should be held.
In changes to state party chiefs made by Palanivel last month, Saravanan was replaced as Federal Territory state liaison committee chairman by Datuk Rajoo Vyraperumal, while Tan Sri Ramasamy Muthusamy took over from Palanivel as Perak chief.
Datuk Ganesan Arumugam was named as new Negri Sembilan state liaison committee chief, taking over from Datuk S. Sothinathan.
