It is not Anwar, it is whoever playing the role of Anwar – TK Chua

With Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s conviction, many have started talking about his successor.  Yes, charisma and leadership do play a part.  But ultimately, the focus should be on the political and democratic process of this country.
This is my take: we can replace Anwar a hundred times, but as long as someone is playing the role of Anwar, that person will not be free from predicaments.
Whoever is playing the role of Anwar will have his life turned upside-down, that is for sure.
He will be criticised for dividing Malaysians and perhaps being a traitor to his race and religion.
His personal life will be monitored and examined to the fullest details.
His personal finance will be subjected to endless insinuation and allegation.
So don’t just replace Anwar with another leader. We have to re-examine the whole political and democratic process.
With Anwar now in jail, other leaders wanting to step into his shoes must critically examine themselves first and foremost.
Firstly, they must have an impeccable credential and character, free from blemishes.
Second, they must have the tenacity to stay for the long haul.
Third, they must find new ways to struggle within our political and democratic system.
It is useless to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results.
Right now most Pakatan Rakyat leaders are not even united in their resolve, much less their ability to think outside the box.
And for us the people, I think we must appreciate that it is never easy to be opposition politicians, more so to be the leader.
