Our family''s pain will NEVER heal - Nurul Izzah vows to continue dad's push for reform
Nurul Izzah Anwar was just 18 years old when her father, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was sacked as deputy prime minister and charged with sodomy and corruption in 1998.
A year later, Anwar was sentenced to six years in prison for corruption and in 2000, to another nine years in jail for sodomy.
Now, Nurul, the mother of two, and one of Malaysia's most prominent opposition politicians, must confront the pain that she may lose her father‎ once again today.
It is an experience that no child would ever wish for, Nurul said‎, as she braces for a court verdict that could see the opposition leader imprisoned for a minimum of five years.
"My father is getting older, and what is sad is that while before, we witnessed the individual who protected us ‎hauled to prison. Now, our father whom we should be protecting may be victimised again. No child would ever want to go through that," the 35-year-old told The Malaysian Insider yesterday.
The PKR vice-president and Lembah Pantai MP said the pain ‎she and her family were experiencing now would never heal, even as she recalled her father's message to her – not to give up and continue their efforts to bring change, or “reformasi”, to the country.
"(My father's) main message was for us to be prepared for any possibility. He also told us keep going, to not surrender but continue in our efforts, demanding 'reformasi'.‎
"Sixteen years have passed. So we children should be more knowledgeable in our struggle to demand justice," said Nurul.
Despite the cloud of grief enveloping the family, she said they did not dwell on the sadness during what could possibly be their ‎final moments together with their father under the same roof.
"Actually, the time we spent with my father‎ was full of happiness and warmth. My father's humour, charisma, courage, and playful teasing has become a source of cheer not just for my mother and his children, but also his grandchildren in Bukit Segambut.
"Hence, the bitterness and pain for the second time as a result of the slander hurled against him will not heal; we can only place our hope on the truth and the values that my father has left‎ behind."
Despite the circumstances, Nurul said that she was extremely hopeful that her father would be acquitted tomorrow, based on how the case had played out in the Federal Court.
"Actually our hopes are very high, given the laws and the arguments presented by the lawyers, Ramkarpal (Singh), Gobind (Singh), Sangeet (Kaur) and, of course, Datuk Gopal Sri Ram.
"‎Surely my father will be acquitted," said Nurul.
‎The High Court in 2012 acquitted Anwar of sodomising Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, his former personal aide, but the Court of Appeal last year reversed the findings of the trial court and sentenced the Permatang Pauh MP to five years’ jail.
Anwar is on bail pending today's decision by the Federal court bench chaired by chief justice Tun Arifin Zakaria. – TMI
