Penang ferry fares to be reviewed

Pedestrian passengers not likely to be affected, says Liow
liowferryGEORGE TOWN: The Transport Ministry will be reviewing the Penang ferry fares following a proposal by the operator.
Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai told reporters today that any hike was likely to affect only vehicles, not pedestrian passengers.
The operator has also proposed a hike in cargo fees.
Liow did not say when the review would start or be completed, but gave an assurance that the public would have 14 days to provide feedback.
“The fares are regulated,” he said. “If we allow them to float, fares would go up at the expense of the people.”
He said the ferry operator was allowed to seek a review of fares and cargo charges every 10 years.
The last review was in 2005.
Liow said the operator recorded a loss of RM23 million in 2013.
The Penang ferry service, the oldest in the country, has been operating since 1920. It transports commuters between the Raja Tun Uda Terminal in George Town and the Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal in Butterworth across the Penang channel.
The service comes under the Penang Port operations managed by Seaport Terminal Sdn Bhd.
