PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was released from police custody at 2am this morning, four hours after he was arrested at his home at Denai Alam near Shah Alam late last night.
Tweeting about his release, Nik Nazmi thanked supporters who had gathered in solidarity with him at the Jinjang police station, where he had been held.
"Alhamdulillah selesai keterangan sy diambil. Sy telah dibebaskan sekitar jam 2pg. TK kpd semua #KitaLawan #BebasAnwar #March2Freedom," he posted through his handle @niknazmi.
PKR had earlier released a statement on Nik Nazmi's arrest.
Its communications director, Fahmi Fadzil, said about 10 police officers from the serious crime unit in Dang Wangi had turned up at Nik Nazmi's house.
"Nik Nazmi was with his wife and child when the police came to the house," he said.
Nik Nazmi, who is also Selangor's Seri Setia assemblyman, was taken to the Jinjang police station to have his statement recorded.
A police source said that Nik Nazmi was being investigated under Section 143 of the Penal Code for unlawful assembly, believed to be over the protest gatherings held in Kuala Lumpur following Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's conviction.
His arrest came just a day after student activist Adam Adli Abd Halim and PKR's Jingga 13 movement leader Fariz Musa, were arrested in Kuala Lumpur, also over such a gathering, where they called for justice to prevail in Anwar's case, saying it was a political conspiracy to topple the opposition leader.
On February 10, the Federal Court upheld the sodomy conviction on Anwar, sentencing him to five years' imprisonment.
